16-19 Tuition Fund

16-19 Tuition Fund rationale and 2021-22 proposal

Background

The Department of Education announced funding to support students whose learning was disrupted as a result of the COVID pandemic. This 16-19 Tuition Fund is available to all 16 to 19 providers and is ring-fenced for 16 to 19 small group tuition only. The guidance indicates that the supported students must be on a 16 to 19 study programme and have not achieved grade 5 or above in GCSE maths and/or English by age 16.

The funding can be used to support small group tuition for 16 to 19 students where learning has been disrupted.  

 

Allocation of the 16-19 Tuition Fund

Bishop Challoner commits to using the small group tuition funding that it has been given to mitigate against the impact of the pandemic on our students. Sessions will be limited to three to five students per group and will be beyond normal timetabled hours. Students will be prioritised for small group tuition based on the guidance released by the Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA).

Support sessions will be prioritised for the following students:

  • Those who have a grade 4/5 or below in GCSE Maths and/or English.

In addition, we will also prioritise:

  • Those identified as low prior attainers.
  • Those with an EHCP

 

Examples of some of the Tuition Support on offer will include:

  • GCSE exam re-sit preparation (Year 13 only as all students in Year 12 have a grade 4 or higher in GCSE English and Maths).
  • Bespoke subject support/catch-up
  • Small group subject specific sessions
  • Specialist support to improve engagement for learners  

Research from the Education Endowment Fund underpins our approach particularly in terms of intervention as it highlights the positive impact of structured interventions as a source of academic support for those who have fallen behind furthest.

 

Measuring impact

Stage 1

Identify students eligible for 16-19 tuition fund.

Stage 2

Share student lists with HoF and subject teachers. All staff to provide a baseline assessment for the students in their 16-19 tuition fund cohort.

Stage 3

Faculties to prepare an intervention plan to support these students and address gaps in knowledge and understanding.

Stage 4

Staff to deliver sessions, before or after school, or on Saturdays. Staff to assess students once the sessions have been delivered and to measure the progress of the targeted students.
