On the morning of Wednesday, 8th December the students at Bishop Challoner Boys’ School were treated to a talk from boxing legend and national treasure Frank Bruno. The visit was part of the launch of the new #boyswithbelief campaign, which begins across the Boys’ School this term.

The morning began with a Q+A in the board room with 8 lucky boys who had the chance to talk to Frank about his life, his boxing career and how it felt to be a former world champion. To the delight of some of our young boxers, he then signed the gloves that they had brought with them.

Two assemblies were then delivered in the school Theatre to ensure that every boy in the school had the chance to take part. The talks were led by Mr Young and Mr Demus, who asked Frank questions about his life and his career, with the floor then opened to questions from the boys. Frank spoke about his troubled childhood and how he first discovered his talent for boxing as well as the sacrifice and discipline it took to get to the level he did. He also spoke candidly about his mental health, and emphasised the importance of seeking help when it is needed and the benefits of daily exercise. Finally, he spoke about the Frank Bruno Foundation - his charity and centre in Northampton devoted to helping those recovering from periods of mental ill health.

Bryan Young, Head of Bishop Challoner Boys’ School said: “It was a real honour to hear Frank speak about his incredible achievements and the hard work, belief and integrity that it takes to be a sportsman of his calibre. It was also very powerful to hear him talk about the importance of looking after your mental health and seeking help when you need it. Our boys will be talking about this visit for a very long time. It was a privilege to have Frank in school. Frank also enjoyed himself and will be returning soon to lead some workshops to our boys.
