The 16-19 Programme

Here at Bishop Challoner, it is our goal that all students who enter the Sixth Form, do so from an informed viewpoint and we use our Open Evening, student interviews and data to ensure that all students are following the most appropriate pathway. Our aim is for all students to have a study programme shaped around their attainment to date (based on predicted grades initially, but refined in light of achieved grades before commencing the Sixth Form), education and career goals.

 

How do we meet the requirements of the 16 – 19 study programme?

All ESFA funded education for 16 to 19 year olds should be delivered as a study programme which combines qualifications and other activities, and which is tailored to each student’s prior attainment and career goals

 

Every study programme must have a core aim. For the majority of students, this will be either the study of substantial technical, applied or academic qualification(s) or preparation for employment

Bishop Challoner offers a Level 3 programme composed of A Level qualifications or BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma, CTEC Level 3. We offer a wide range of courses both academic and vocational. We also offer an Extended Project Qualification for our students to supplement their studies and show future employers/educational institutions a student’s broader research based skills.

Students who do not hold a GCSE grade 4 in Maths and/or English are required to continue these subjects as part of their study programme

In Sixth Form at Bishop Challoner all students who do not hold a grade 4 in Maths and/or English are provided with bespoke sessions to retake these subjects. Re-sits are offered in November and June exam sessions.

 

All study programmes should include work experience and non-qualification activities which complement the other elements of the programme and support the student to progress to further or higher education or to employment. The non-qualification activity should develop students’ character, skills, attitudes and confidence.

Students in our Sixth Form are expected to take part in a number of activities which provide them with opportunity to develop a range of personal skills

•Form time is used effectively to discuss a range of important issues and develop key skills, form tutors make regular use of bespoke training sessions provided via the Unifrog platform.

•All students attend the Skills London fair at the London Excel centre in Year 12. A range of speakers and visits are organised to support students in choosing their pathway Post-18. A careers advisor is available for 1-2-1 interviews.

•We work alongside the Tower Hamlets Education and Business Partnership to source work experience placements for students in March of year 12. We are further supported by outreach groups such as Healthcare Horizons. Students are encouraged to actively seek independent work experience placements.

•Our students all support the Catholic ethos of the school. There are opportunities to be directly involved through liturgies, assemblies and charity fundraising

•Sixth Form students have the opportunity to develop inter-personal skills through the mentoring project which actively supports students lower down the school.

• INSIGHTS lectures take place twice a month, where visiting speakers discuss a wide range of current issues and careers.
